The city of Berlin hosts 153 museums. You can find some of them in the so-called the “Island of the Museums”, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and it is located in the northern part of Spree Island, between the Spree and the Kupfergraben. Already in 1841 it was named “district dedicated to art and antiquities” by a real decree. Altes Museum (Old Museum) in the Lustgarten, which showed the queen Nefertiti’s bust, el Neues Museum (New Museum), Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery), the Pergamon Museum and the Bode Museum were therefore erected there. The names of the buildings didn’t necessarily match up with the content of the collections which they were displaying.
