Berlins football stadium

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Built in 1934 for the 1936 Olympic Games; its original capacity was for 32,000 spectators. It was designed by Otto March and reemplaced the old “German Stadium”.

This incredible stadium has a great history and hosted the World Cup Final in 1974 and the last world championship where Italy was crowned as world champion in 2006.

It has had several refurbishments over the years. The last one took place between 2000 and 2001, when its capacity grew to 76,000 spectators and it still conserves its characteristic architectonic style of the Nazi period.

It is home to the first division German team Hertha BSC Berlin and of the NFL Europe Football Club team, Berlin Thunder.

Its history makes a visit to the stadium worthwhile despite football matches not taking place here, because its facilities are first class and it is extremely interesting to get to know the history of the place.

The huge metallic structure on the roof of the stadium and the two big statues which are erected at its entrance are the aspects which most stand out. It is really a place where you can take spectacular photos of a tourist attraction which is not too popular.

There are different companies which offer guided tours for a price which averages out at around 30 euros, and which will take you to the stadium and take you back to the starting point within the city. Moreover, the guides are extremely qualified and the history is really interesting.

On the other hand, you can do the tour without going with any company although I would not recommend it, because the history of this fabulous sports stadium is really interesting.

It is located in the Charlottenburg district but is somewhat out of the way from other buildings of posible interest, such as the apartamentos berlin, so to get there you will have to catch the city’s tram and get off at “Olympiastadion” station, which will leave you right in front of this huge construction.

A Guide to Bulgaria Attractions

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Architectural wonders. Archaeological treasures. Beautiful beaches. These are just some of the Bulgaria attractions. Indeed, there are many sights to see in Bulgaria which make it a great destination for holidays.

Valley of the Thracian Kings - The valley of Kazanluk is one of the most popular Bulgaria attractions, particularly since it is the site of several burial mounds and tombs, the most famous of which is the Kazanluk Tomb. Dating back to 400 BC, the Kazanluk Tomb is known for its impressive murals. The lavishly decorated Sveshtari Tomb near Isperih is equally admirable.

Rila Monastery - Located in the northwestern Rila mountains, the Rila Monastery is the largest and most popular monastery in Bulgaria. It is well known for its gold-plated iconostasis, as well as its library of over 250 manuscripts, wood carvings and frescoes.

Aside from the Rila Monastery, the Assumption Bochkava Monastery near the Chaya River is worth visiting, too, as well as the Rozhen Monastery on the slopes of Mount Pirin, which was once a famous calligraphic school.

Church of Saint Sophia - Aside from its monasteries, Bulgaria has many remarkable old churches, which include the famous Church of Saint Sophia. Located in the Bulgarian capital, the three-nave domed basilica is both a religious centre and a national monument. Although not as popular, the Saint Trinity village church made entirely out of stone is also an imposing sight.

Roman Ampitheatre - Located in the city of Plovdiv, the Roman ampitheatre is not just one of the most popular Bulgaria attractions, but also a stage for numerous musical, opera and ballet performances, including the annual Verdi Festival in June. While in Plovdiv, you can also visit various art galleries, such as the Atanas Krastev House and the Philipopolis Art Gallery.

Pirin National Park - Bulgaria is also home to many nature parks which serve as havens for hikers and birdwatchers, the most famous of which is the Pirin National Park. Although not the largest, the Pirin National Park is known for its majestic peaks and valleys, as well as its interesting flora and fauna. Aside from nature parks, Bulgaria has some remarkable natural rock formations, too, such as those in Belogradchik.

Black Sea Coast - The seaside resorts of Bulgaria are popular, too. In fact, many consider them to be the premier Bulgaria attractions, which comes as no surprise since they offer clear waters, white sands and a variety of activities. While the Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria is undoubtedly a must-see region, there are plenty of other interesting places to go to - all of which make Bulgaria a truly great holiday destination.
